j.
simms agency has spent nearly two decades helping some of San
Diego’s most recognizable builders, businesses and non-profit
organizations grow and prosper. We’ve done so because we
are the go-to-place for strategic public relations, media relations
and non-profit marketing. We’ve accomplished this
by creating and implementing integrated marketing communications
plans that make sense. But more than anything else, we’ve
done so by understanding San Diego and knowing what makes it
tick.
From its enterprises to its media, its community leaders to
its everyday people, we understand San Diego. And we put that
knowledge to work everyday for our clients. We take pride in
partnering with organizations whose growth and prosperity has
helped San Diego develop into the thriving city it is today.

After several years of widespread public dissatisfaction under Delaware
North, the former Plaza de Pasado in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
was taken over by Old Town Family Hospitality Corp. and renamed Fiesta de Reyes. Faced
with the challenge of restoring the plaza and its 13 shops and three restaurants
to their former glory, the owner turned the job of regaining community
and political support for this San Diego favorite to j.simms agency. A
new branding campaign paired with steady media relations and a two-day special
event attended by 1,200 people, introduced the highly anticipated new part
of Old Town to an eager San Diego crowd.

BWith uncommon vision and bold, well-considered planning,
Bosa Development has delivered more than 22,000 homes up and
down the coast from Vancouver to San Diego. From within the gates
of Petco Park to atop Cortez Hill, Bosa’s
high-rise residential towers are dramatically changing downtown San Diego’s
skyline. It already has nine signature towers to its name in downtown with
a handful of others planned. While Bosa’s executive marketing team resides
1,400 miles away in Canada, j. simms has taken the lead as Bosa’s on-the-ground
PR contact, which has left us very busy as each of Bosa’s projects boasts
some record-holding title as the most, best or innovatively designed residential
tower in downtown San Diego.
Even before j. simms agency was formed, company founder Julia
Simms was working with The Corky McMillin Companies to grow its
reputation among San Diegans via press relations, marketing communications
and community outreach programs. This partnership now spans 24
years, during which time the McMillin organization has grown
from 300 home sales a year to more than 1,200.
Tucked away in the most southwesterly corner of the United States,
the city of Imperial Beach is a classic example of a Southern
California beach town. Known for its big surf, picturesque pier,
annual Sandcastle Days event and proximity to several ecological
preserves, Imperial Beach has long been a haven for beach trippers
and eco-tourists. j. simms agency was brought on in 2007, to
manage all aspects of the city’s media relations needs
from publicizing local events and news to improving its image
throughout the county, all while maintaining that laid-back beach
attitude.

Nothing says summer in Southern California like a good old-fashioned sandcastle-
(dash) building contest, the epitome of which has been held in Imperial Beach
for the last 29 years. Attracting upwards of 325,000 spectators over
two days, this event is big beans in the sand-carving arena. Since 2008,
j. simms has lent a hand in the public relations for this special event working
with both national and local media to get its story out. In the first
year alone, the event received a whopping 680 column inches of press coverage,
44 minutes of TV news coverage and was featured in the PBS children’s
educational TV show, Curiosity Quest.

Recognizing the need to support even the smallest business venture, ACCIÓN San Diego is a non-profit organization that provides micro-enterprise
development so that hard-working San Diegians have the opportunity to build
their businesses and strengthen the economic foundation of our communities
through self-employment. j. simms along with ACCIÓN is committed
to supporting the future of these emerging micro-entrepreneurs, their families,
and the vital economic infrastructure of the local community. Through media
relations and fundraising partnership efforts, in 2008 ACCIÓN experienced
a 40 percent growth in its loan portfolio.
San Diego County’s unassuming southern region has been quietly evolving
into an international trading hub providing economic strength and diversification
to San Diego. This growth can be attributed to the work done by the South County
Economic Development Council to encourage private investment, promote business
development, and publicize the area’s opportunities. A long-time supporter
of the SCEDC, j. simms’ president sits on the organization’s marketing
committee and more recently has been responsible for the creation and production
of its bimonthly newsletters and annual report.
