Julia Simms, APR
President/Founder

Julia Simms, a 25-year veteran of the public relations and marketing communications fields, is the president and founder of j. simms agency in San Diego.  Her firm was established in 1995 and has grown from a single-woman public relations firm to a full-service marketing and branding firm with a team of more than a dozen.  She also is a partner in O'Sullivan|Simms Internacional, a cross-border marketing and public relations firm doing business in Mexico.
 
Having earned the prestigious APR designation from the Public Relations Society of America, Julia has won more awards from the Building Industry Association of San Diego County for Best Public Relations Campaign than any other person or company in the area. She was awarded the Eva Irving Community Service Award from PRSA in 2003 and the Building Industry Association dubbed her The Gary Campbell Industry Professional of the Year in 1999.  Born and raised in Coronado, Simms attended local schools and San Diego State University before graduating from the University of Phoenix in San Diego.  She sits on the board of directors for both the South County Economic Development Council and Accion San Diego.

Michael Simms
Senior VP, New Technologies

A graduate of United States International University, Mike has had stints in software development at Mitchell International as a Quality Assurance Engineer and at language translation firm Globalink as Software Project Manager and then Research and Development Operations Manager.

After 10 years in software development, Mike joined his wife and became a partner in j. simms agency.  With vast experience in project and personnel management, technical innovation, and all forms of business writing, he instantly became a vital part of the team.  As Senior VP, New Technologies, he serves the firm’s high-tech clients as well as managing day-to-day operations of the multifaceted agency.

Troy Hartmann

If it has a ball, field, hoop or goal, chances are Troy Hartmann is a fan of it.  Serving as the Managing Director for the Raleigh-Durham office, Troy has a thing for sports that can only be called nutty.  Lucky for him, he has been able to combine this passion with his career having worked with the University of Connecticut Athletic Department in marketing and sponsorship sales, in a senior management role at Miami University Athletic Department and with the Cleveland Cavaliers/Gund Arena Company.

Spanning more than 15 years including time with three multi-media corporate sponsorship rights holder companies (CAVS/Gund Sports Marketing, Host Communications, IMG) as well as with Capital Broadcasting Co. in Raleigh, Troy’s career has given him ample experience in securing and fostering marketing partnerships.  Over the years he has built a lengthy client list that includes such powerhouses as Gatorade, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Cintas Corporation, Pepsi-Cola, Aeropostale, Kroger Food Stores, Cincinnati Bell, Ashley Furniture, Snyder's of Hanover and NEC.  Raleigh-Durham area clients, Chick-fil-A and the Carolina Hurricanes, are also now being served by Troy.  With his expert record activating marketing partnerships, he is the perfect choice to lead the eastern seaboard division of the j. simms agency team in all aspects of business development and marketing campaigns.

When not attending sporting events or organizing his sports memorabilia, Troy enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, traveling and experiencing new places.

Bonnie Vieira
Director of Client Services

Bonnie is a public relations and advertising professional with a proven record of developing and executing multi-faceted communication campaigns across print, television, digital media and special event arenas.  At j. simms agency she is the Director of Client Services responsible for coordinating all aspects of advertising services, including media planning and buying, as well as creative direction to graphic design and copywriting staff.  She was instrumental in the launch of the agency’s online division in 2008, covering all facets of online and new media marketing.   

Bonnie is a 2006 honors graduate from San Diego State University’s School of Communication where she earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations and a minor in film and new media.  While at the university, she was a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America, Order of Omega Honors Society and Kappa Delta sorority

Lisa De Marco

Jen

Judging by Lisa De Marco’s extensive knowledge of San Diego’s hiking trail system and native plants, one would be surprised to learn she is originally from Illinois and has only called our lovely city home since 1985.  She earned her design degree from Southern Illinois University back in the day of X-Acto knives and paste-up boards but really came to sharpen her graphic design teeth once computer technology took over the industry. She fell in love with publication design and has worked on numerous magazines including Living in Style and Liquid Living.  While Lisa finds the endless possibilities of a blank glossy page utterly enthralling, she has been able to translate a similar level of passion for online design and her Web site creations are proof of this.       

When not cooking her specialty dish of risotto with wild mushrooms and Brie or digging in her garden of colorful flowers, Lisa spends time with her partner and their blended family of four daughters.

Jonathan Hess
Graphic Designer and Social Media Coordinator

Jonathon

Jonathan’s creative contributions to j. simms agency began in 2008 and today he works with the agency on many of its creative endeavors whether it be in print, online or an interactive medium.  After earning a BA in Communications from Sonoma State University, Jonathan’s career in marketing and advertising began in 2005.  He worked as a Marketing Director in the Indian Gaming industry; designing and managing targeted marketing campaigns nationwide. 

Jonathan’s family history can be traced back to Cleveland and many family members still remain. Family reunions in Cleveland have brought Jonathan closer to the city he calls, “Americas Best Kept Secret.”

Suzanne Anderson
Account Coordinator

Suzanne joined j. simms agency in 2009 as Account Coordinator.  Her responsibilities include writing a variety of press materials, maintaining media contacts on behalf of a myriad of clients and evaluating publicity campaign results. She also works closely with our hospitality clients making sure their ever-changing events, promotions and entertainment are broadcast to the community. She has quickly risen as our social media queen who manages the sometimes hourly updates of our client’s online profiles.

Raised in Dallas, Texas, she moved to San Diego in 2005 to attend San Diego State University. She graduated in May of 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Media Studies with an emphasis in Public Relations.
